Yearbook Artwork Contest!

Hi Friends!

We just wanted to remind students to submit any artwork you want to include in the yearbook by this Friday!

How to enter the contest:

Any student who is interested can submit a drawing

The drawing can be about our school, our city, nature, friends…anything you like!

                                                                  

Use an 8-1/2 x11 sheet of paper for the drawing.

Write the student’s name, room # and teacher’s name on the back of the drawing, in pencil.

Turn in the drawing to your teacher by November 22, 2013

Winning entries will be selected by the yearbook committee and scanned to produce digital files to be included in this year's yearbook...Who knows your artwork might even make it on to the yearbook cover!

Name Our Garden Contest...

Hi Friends!

As many of you many have already seen our edible garden has had new planting recently and we are reminded that at this time of new beginnings we REALLY need to name this wonderful gem of a space!  We have asked parents already involved with the garden for ideas, but we haven't come up with anything that really resonates just yet, so we thought we would reach out to our students to see what they come up with...after all this is their garden!

That said we will be hosting a naming contest over the next two weeks...students are encouraged to take a minute and think about what they would like to call the garden.  Imagine the name on a poster or maybe even a t-shirt....and if students get stuck, then here are a few questions to try and answer that might help them:
   What do you think of when someone mentions the garden?
   What has been your favorite activity in the garden?  Maybe digging, planting or even eating?  Can you use that activity to create a name?
   If the garden were a book or a video game, then what would it be called?

Students will receive a contest entry form this week during class which will be collected by teachers this Friday.  The winning name will be selected by the Friends of Gardnerville board along with Principal Rosner and announced after students return from the Thanksgiving holiday.

As an added bonus we have a parent at school who is a blacksmith and who has agreed to make a sign for the garden so the winning name will be memorialized for all to see!

We look forward to seeing what creative names our students come up with!

Hi Friends!

Well we have survived the first two weeks of school, but despite the 4-day weekend that is upon us we can't sit back and relax too much because it is that time of year - our Annual Giving Pledge Drive.
This year we have an ambitious goal of raising $50,000 - this equates to $100 per family per year or $10/mo for 10 months if we have 100% participation.  When you think of it like that it doesn't seem like much does it?  But just think of what it can bring us - more books, more arts and music, more physical education and more time in the edible garden.  The money you give helps Gardner and all of it's staff and students EVERYDAY...in the classroom, out on the playground and on the stage your dollars are hard at work facilitating and enriching your child's education.
So please pledge now and spread the word!  Thank You!

Welcome Back!

The 2013 - 2014 school year has already gotten off to a great start:

• We have a new principal - Mr. Michael Rosner, who comes to us after working 15 years at nearby Wonderland Avenue School and 21 years within LAUSD.  We are excited to see where his leadership takes us and hopeful that he can help Gardner to continue to grow its arts and enrichment programs. 

• Speaking of growing, the Edible Garden we constructed last May in the lower playground has had some incredible progress over the summer and the plants are literally bursting with food ripe for the picking.  The Cherry Tomatoes are amazing and there are hundreds for the taking - if you haven't done so already, then by all means stop by, look around and sample the rewards of our kids' incredible green thumbs!   

• And if helping us construct the garden wasn't enough our fabulous partners at EnrichLA are going to offer garden classes throughout the school year so our students can continue to learn and benefit from hands on experience 'playing' in the dirt.  Four sessions are scheduled to occur in 40 minute time-blocks every Thursday from 11:30am until 2:35pm and each class will participate in a six-week long interdisciplinary garden unit program.  Parents are strongly encouraged to participate and help the EnrichLA staff.  It is a wonderful way to volunteer at school and become actively involved in your child's education.  Please contact Whitney Wyatt at friendsofgardenerville@yahoo.com if you would like to become an Edible Garden Volunteer.

There are many announcements as we kick off 2013....

#1:  In case you haven't heard, this year will be the first year you can purchase a yearbook for Gardner Street School!!!  

In addition to school portraits we will also be including candid shots taken throughout the year at various school functions so we would like to invite families and students to submit photos for possible inclusion in the book.  GET YOUR PICTURES IN THE YEARBOOK!  If you've got great photos of school and community events or you and your friends just having fun, we'd like to see them - our photographers can't be everywhere!  Help us get as many photos as possible to create a terrific book everyone will want to have.

Buy your yearbook now for only $20 during our pre-sale now through March 15th...and for an additional $10 you can also purchase a 'HAPPY AD' and write a one sentence personal message to a student, friend or teacher to be included in the yearbook as well!

#3: Our next FUNraiser is scheduled for Friday, February 8th at Shakey's Pizza (7001 Santa Monica Blvd.) from 5-8pm.  Bring the whole family and friends to enjoy some pizza with fellow schoolmates & parents to help raise money for our school.  And if you can't stay for the party don't worry - take out orders count too!  25% of all food purchases will be donated back to Friends of Gardnerville, so bring your appetite!
